I wish I had done this when I was married 13 years ago….   I have had this conversation with all of my couples and decided to share with you some Pros and Cons.

You may immediately shun the idea at first because you may be dreaming of your fiance’s face light up when he sees you enter through those big doors walking towards him.  You will want to hug him and just freeze this moment… but you will have to immediately  turn to the priest, pastor, reverend… and get to business!!  You know – some churches will not allow the photographer to even be in the ceremony.  There is pretty much no chance of that “special moment” for most couples.

However a “First Look” isn’t for everyone, and it’s not the “traditional” thing to do…but with the “Modern Bride”…. photography is of the highest importance  -  This is where a “First Look” just works!

I looked around for some pros and cons of a “First Look” and here is what I found.

Some Pros

- You can revel in seeing each other for the first time, soak it up, and enjoy some quiet moments alone with each other. Cry, laugh, do a little dance- whatever you want to do!

- You will get some awesome photographs of you and your soon-to-be husband and have ample time to do so.  Also it will allow your photographer not to be rushed and have more time to be creative.

- You can spend more time with your guests and loved ones that came to celebrate your special day, instead of having to shoo them out of the church for the photographer to be able to get those hurried up family and group shots.

- Having a First Look will allow you to have most of your photos done before the ceremony. Then you can enjoy a relaxed trip to the reception with your wedding party – and not tie them up taking more photos.

- Cindy of Cindy Dover Photography says, “When my clients have a First Look – they have that private special moment and can show their real emotions and not have to worry about what the guest are expecting…. Also too, having the time to relax before the ceremony is super nice.  Not one couple has ever regretted it.. they honestly thank me for sharing this idea with them.”

Here is a great example that I was able to capture a first look moment as I was not allowed in the church during this wedding with my camera – and this does happen a lot ….  Fortunately,  I was able to shoot through the glass doors and still get some amazing shots!!  I love these images!!!

Some Cons

- If you’re extremely traditional, a First Look could take away from the build up and suspense of walking down the aisle when the ceremony begins.

- Your guests won’t be able to share that “first look” you and your groom have when you’re walking down the aisle.

- You may make your “more traditional” family members unhappy.

I hope this post is helpful for you!  It may help you decide what you really want on your special day….. Whoever your photographer is, make sure you share your thoughts with them!
